DayZ 1.29 weapon tier list — meta guns after the November 2026 update
DayZ 1.29 shuffled the meta. Four weapons are the only unambiguous pick-ups (S KA-101, M4-A1, VSS, SVD). The KA-M dropped to A after the recoil tweak. The 5.45×39 feeder nerf makes KA-74 commitments painful. The honest rule: pick a KA-101 over anything else your run finds.
DayZ 1.29 landed with a mixed bag of weapon tweaks — nothing dramatic, but enough small adjustments to recoil, damage, and attachment compatibility that the community tier list from six months ago is no longer accurate. This is the practical ranking for anyone playing vanilla or lightly modded Chernarus and Livonia right now, built around what actually survives a firefight, not what looks good on the stats page.
There are 23 primary weapons worth caring about. The tier list below sorts them by real-world effectiveness, factoring in loot availability, ammo scarcity, and whether the recoil model after 1.29 lets you actually hit a running target at mid-range. If you've been auto-reaching for the KA-M because the subreddit told you to in 2023, read past Tier S first.
Tier list at a glance
Tier S — the four you fight to find
KA-101 S
5.56 ammo is everywhere, the KA-101 accepts both east-bloc and west-bloc optics (ACOG, PSO-1, Kashtan, Kobra, M4 red dot), and after the 1.29 recoil pass the first three shots sit on target at ranges where the KA-M used to wobble. 30-round mags are not rare. This is the gun you build the rest of your loadout around.
Where to look: Tisy Military Base, NWAF main hangars, Krasnostav. You will not find it on the coast.
The only unambiguous "pick it up now" rifle in the game. If you see a KA-101, your current run is complete — anything you do next is a bonus.
M4-A1 S
Functionally identical to the KA-101 — same ammo, same optics compatibility with the handguard rail, fractionally better ADS speed with a stock-collapsed layout. The reason it's not "better" than the KA-101 is purely availability — M4 mags are harder to find than 5.56 Stanag mags for the KA-101 in 1.29, which is backwards from how it used to be. If you find one with a 30-round mag and an optic already attached, keep it. Otherwise don't walk past a KA-101 to search for one.
VSS Vintorez S
9×39 is heavy, loud per shot in the sense of damage, and completely silent at the shooter end. Integral suppressor, integral PSO-1 scope. If you're playing the "shoot once, nobody heard, keep looting" style of DayZ, nothing else comes close. The ammo is rare and you can't improvise it from anything else — carrying a VSS means carrying two full stacks or leaving it behind.
Where to look: Tisy, NWAF, Pavlovo military. Almost never in dynamic events.
SVD Dragunov S
7.62×54R, PSO-1 scope, 10-round mag. Two-shots a chest at 400 m, one-shots a head at any range the engine still draws your target. The 1.29 patch adjusted sway during unscoped movement but the scoped-and-prone behavior is unchanged — this is still the best mid-to-long weapon in the game that isn't a pure bolt-action. The downside is noise: there's no suppressor model that fits.
Tier A — the backbone
KA-M (AKM) A
Still the workhorse. 7.62×39 is easier to find than 5.56 in rural areas, and the KA-M shreds at close to medium range. The reason it dropped from S to A is the 1.29 recoil tweak — the vertical climb on sustained auto is noticeably worse now than the KA-101's, and you can't fit the better western optics. Keep it until you find a KA-101.
SV-98 A
7.62×54R, 10-round mag, bolt-action, compatible with the PU scope and the newer LRS. If you got the SV-98 before 1.29 you probably noticed the reload animation is now slightly faster — minor, but it stacks up over a long fight. Spawns almost exclusively at Tisy and military helicrashes. A good find; not worth going out of your way for over an SVD.
Mosin 91/30 A
The budget option that never dies. One-shot headshot at any range, cheap ammo, PU scope fits perfectly, and the cycle rate is forgiving for first-time long-range players. The only reason this isn't Tier S is the five-round internal magazine — missing a shot and reloading in the open is how most Mosin players die.
BK-18, SG5-K, MP-133 A
These are the "found one" weapons — you don't plan a run around them, but if you grab a BK-18 (single-shot .308), an SG5-K (MP5, 9×19), or a pump-action MP-133, you have a usable weapon until you upgrade. The MP-133 in particular has been quietly good for the last three patches; buckshot at close range inside Berezino apartment blocks is still a one-shot kill in most cases.
Tier B — situational B
The KA-74 and KA-74U use 5.45×39, which is less common post-1.29 since Bohemia shifted some military loot tables. They still work; you just have to commit to the ammo. The LAR (FAL analog) is a heavy 7.62×51 battle rifle that hits hard and is accurate but has serious muzzle rise — skilled players love it, average players waste it. The Vikhr is an SMG with punch, but it's rare enough that you're better off finding a KA-M and moving on. The SKS is beloved for a reason — PU scope, reliable 7.62×39, 10-round internal — but the reload speed is slower than it needs to be and the ammo capacity holds it back.
5.45×39 ammo is harder to find in 1.29. Bohemia reweighted military loot in favor of 5.56 and 7.62×39. If you commit to a KA-74 you'll be scrounging for feeder rounds — plan the run accordingly.
Tier C — leave them if you can C
The Winchester 70 in .308 is a decent early-game sniper but gets outclassed the moment you find anything in Tier A. The Blaze (double-barrel .308 with a 2-round break action) is a meme — fun to use in an ambush, suicide in a sustained fight. The BK-133 is the Winchester's shotgun cousin and shares its "fine until you find better" slot. The Trumpet, Izh-18, and CR-61 Scorpion are weapons you carry for 15 minutes between spawning and finding something real.
Attachments — what matters in 1.29
Three attachments punch above their weight after the patch:
- Suppressors. All three improvised suppressors (east, west, pistol) now degrade noticeably faster. Carry two if you're planning to engage more than three times.
- PSO-1 scope. Still the single most valuable optic in the game because it fits the KA-101, KA-M, SVD, and VSS. If you only find one scope today, let it be this.
- ACOG (M68 ACOG). The new 1.29 reticle is cleaner and the 4× zoom works out to about 400 m of useful range on the M4-A1 or KA-101.
What this tier list is not
This is a pragmatic ranking for mid-skill players on populated servers. If you're on a PvE server fighting zombies, use whatever looks cool — the damage differences don't matter against infected. If you're in a hardcore 1PP milsim community, the LAR might outrank the KA-M in your hands because you can control it. And if you're playing on a server with a loot economy mod that completely rewrites spawn chances, ignore every "where to find it" note above.
The tier list that matters is the one you update every time you die and look at what killed you. Mine looks like this today. Yours might look different in a week — DayZ has always been that kind of game.
